Down Syndrome Can’t Stop this Varsity Athlete

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 10, 2008

Brad Hennefer is congratulated by friend Eric Einbinder (left) after Cherry Hill East's basketball game against Pennsauken.

Talk about a great, inspiring story! Read this account, “A player who can light up a court,” in the Philadelphia Inquirer about a young man who has overcome adversity to become an inspiration for his peers, entire school, and beyond.

Brad Hennefer is not the star of the Cherry Hill High School East basketball team. But in many ways, he is its heart. He also may be the only boys’ varsity player in the country with Down syndrome.

As the school’s principal says, this is a great example of the power of inclusion in our educational system, Read the rest of this entry »

Ski Jumping Next?

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 4, 2008

Maybe I should try ski jumping sometime? That ought to scare me silly. If I could overcome that kind of fear and do it, wow! Here’s an article about an East Coast ski jumping festival that got me thinking about it: “Slide, Jump, Fly in Connecticut.” They also give ski jumping lessons there, when the festival isn’t going on. Super Bowl Actually Was a Super Battle

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 3, 2008

That was a really good battle — close and competitive down to the final minutes, with dramatic performances by both teams. I’d say the game definitely out-shined the commercials (which I did not think were as notable as in some years past). More on the commercials later, but the group I watched with agreed the ones with the baby E-Trader were among our favorite (both versions of that ad, the vomiting and the clown).

Super Bowl Actually Super?

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 3, 2008

I have not commented on the Super Bowl in this blog. Trust me, if my Philadelphia Eagles were in it, I would have had plenty to say. But, I don’t even want to talk about their lousy season.

So, we have destiny versus grit, dynasty versus underdog, etc. Part of me wants to see someone replace the Miami Dolphins, finally, as the only NFL team to have a perfect season. Part of me thinks the Patriots deserve to be crowned Super Bowl Champions after the incredibly dominating season they have had — it would be hard to deny they have truly been the best team in football, after all.

But part of me loves underdogs and upsets, and this would be an upset all right. It would be right up there with my very first Super Bowl memory, when Joe Namath and the Jets beat the Colts. My dad assured me before the game that the Colts would win, and I was rooting for them (why, I don’t know — maybe I liked the logo on their helmets?).

I was baffled when the Colts lost, not really grasping at that age that those everyone agreed were “the best” could be beaten — that conventional wisdom could be wrong. Maybe I have liked underdogs since then, having seen how much more fun it would have been to have pulled for the Jets when they won. And after all, if they lost, that was what everyone expected, anyway.

But in this game there’s another factor. Read the rest of this entry »
