I wrote here recently about Bob Furniss’ son, Kevin, being trapped in a collapsed building after the tornado hit Union University in Tennessee (see, Photos After the Tornado). At the time, I only had a bare outline of what had happened, based on a rushed email from Bob, although the photos from the scene pretty well conveyed the magnitude of the horror.
Bob’s started a blog — of course! — to communicate more fully with all of his son’s well-wishers. Check it out here: http://kevinstatus.blogspot.com/ In a nutshell, the news is still good, but his status is precarious. You just don’t walk away from being crushed by a building, either literally or figuratively.
Bob’s only just begun writing in the blog, and he’s uploaded his own photos, too. I’ll be following the story there, myself, and if you’re interested you can too. This is Bob’s photo of what was left of the building that collapsed, and below is Bob’s caption.
Look in the middle – this is the hole where Kevin and the others were pulled from. The paramedics told me that the pile was about twice as high when they arrived. The first three were directly under the hole about 10 feet down. Kevin and three others were about 10 feet down right where the white pole on the left ends. They all were pulled through the middle hole. The large concrete piece above them is laying on two vending machines that held it and did not allow it to crush the guys. Notice the 4×4 blocks in the hole that were the “chucks” that helped build the hole.
