Biofuels Power Up Global Warming

What is this, Depressing Scientific Reports Day? A billion people are going to die from smoking and now I read in the NYT that the gung-ho drive toward biofuels is doing more harm than good, according to two scientific studies: “Biofuels Deemed a Greenhouse Threat.” Where’s a rock to crawl under?

Almost all biofuels used today cause more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels if the full emissions costs of producing these “green” fuels are taken into account, two studies being published Thursday have concluded.

Well, we darn well better take into account the full impact of producing any fuel. One of the studies’ authors refers to the prior failure to do this as an “accounting error.” That sounds harmless, but it’s not. It’s one heck of an error: Read the rest of this entry »

Smoking Predicted to Kill 1 Billion People

That’s an attention-getting headline, isn’t it? Even though the date by which the billionth death would take place is the year 2100, it’s still an appalling prospect. But that’s the point the World Health Organization wanted to make, of course, in their report issued today, “WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2008.” I read this AP article about it on Wired: “Tobacco Could Kill 1 Billion by 2100.”

The World Health Organization warned in a new report Thursday that the “tobacco epidemic” is growing and could claim 1 billion lives by the end of the century unless governments dramatically step up efforts to curb smoking.

2008 Call Center of the Year Award

We’re now accepting applications for the ICMI Membership’s 2008 Global Call Center of the Year Award — the application deadline is March 14, 2008. As I wrote back in 2006 (Award-Winning Call Centers), I’ve had the privilege of being involved with this prestigious award since the beginning, and I find it to be one of the most satisfying aspects of my job.

And this year we’ve added an optional video submission to the application! For extra credit, applicants can submit a 3-minute video about their call center, to help our selection committee in the difficult task of evaluating and selecting the winners. ICMI will make all of those videos available on our YouTube channel, ICMIQueueTube, so keep your eye out for them. They should make for good watching, and you can even justify being on YouTube at work in you’re watching the ICMIQueueTube channel (well, as long as you don’t spend too much time on the funny call center videos, I suppose).

Clinton’s a Commodity, Obama’s an Experience

Why would Democratic votes break down so starkly along educational lines? David Brooks’ NYT column, “Questions for Dr. Retail,” is an amusing, yet insightful, riff on the differences between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s appeal to different kinds of voters — in particular those who are more highly educated compared to those who are not.

In this mock interview with “Dr. Retail,” Brooks presents a consumer-oriented analysis of the Democratic presidential race.

Listen, the essential competition in many consumer sectors is between commodity providers and experience providers, the companies that just deliver product and the companies that deliver a sensation, too. There’s Safeway, and then there is Whole Foods. There’s the PC, and then there’s the Mac. There are Holiday Inns, and there are W Hotels. There’s Walgreens, and there’s The Body Shop.
