Super Bowl Actually Was a Super Battle

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 3, 2008

That was a really good battle — close and competitive down to the final minutes, with dramatic performances by both teams. I’d say the game definitely out-shined the commercials (which I did not think were as notable as in some years past). More on the commercials later, but the group I watched with agreed the ones with the baby E-Trader were among our favorite (both versions of that ad, the vomiting and the clown).

Ask Not What J.F.K. Can Do for Obama

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 3, 2008

Excellent, thorough analysis by Frank Rich in the NYT, not only of the oft-made comparisons between JFK and Obama, but also of Obama’s relative strengths and weaknesses as a candidate and potential president.

For all the Barack Obama-J. F. K. comparisons, whether legitimate or over-the-top, what has often been forgotten is that Mr. Obama’s weaknesses resemble Kennedy’s at least as much as his strengths. But to compensate for those shortcomings, he gets an extra benefit that J. F. K. lacked in 1960. There’s nothing vague about the public’s desire for national renewal in 2008, with a reviled incumbent in the White House and only 19 percent of the population finding the country on the right track, according to the last Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll. America is screaming for change. Read the rest of this entry »

Obama’s Surge: That Was Fast!

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 3, 2008

See the original image at usatoday.comThe headline in USA Today says it all: “Poll: Obama wipes out Clinton’s lead.” I was starting to have doubts, I admit. Just last night I was on the phone with a friend and expressed my concern that Hillary was going to prevail on Super Tuesday. She told me to have more faith in the American Voter. Here’s hoping she’s right and the polls reflect a surge that will continue building through Tuesday.

Barack Obama has surged to a statistical tie with Hillary Rodham Clinton in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, erasing a double-digit national lead she held just two weeks ago and turning the Democratic nomination race into a nail-biter.

Super Bowl Actually Super?

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 3, 2008

I have not commented on the Super Bowl in this blog. Trust me, if my Philadelphia Eagles were in it, I would have had plenty to say. But, I don’t even want to talk about their lousy season.

So, we have destiny versus grit, dynasty versus underdog, etc. Part of me wants to see someone replace the Miami Dolphins, finally, as the only NFL team to have a perfect season. Part of me thinks the Patriots deserve to be crowned Super Bowl Champions after the incredibly dominating season they have had — it would be hard to deny they have truly been the best team in football, after all.

But part of me loves underdogs and upsets, and this would be an upset all right. It would be right up there with my very first Super Bowl memory, when Joe Namath and the Jets beat the Colts. My dad assured me before the game that the Colts would win, and I was rooting for them (why, I don’t know — maybe I liked the logo on their helmets?).

I was baffled when the Colts lost, not really grasping at that age that those everyone agreed were “the best” could be beaten — that conventional wisdom could be wrong. Maybe I have liked underdogs since then, having seen how much more fun it would have been to have pulled for the Jets when they won. And after all, if they lost, that was what everyone expected, anyway.

But in this game there’s another factor. Read the rest of this entry »

Campaign for America’s Wilderness

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 3, 2008

I rarely click on website banner ads, but one caught my eye this morning and I checked it out. I’d suggest it’s worth a look to you, too, if you’re interested in taking action to preserve wilderness areas.

You Can’t Always Get What You Want

Posted by Ted Hopton on February 3, 2008

Quoting from those rock ‘n roll philosophers, the Rolling Stones, “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you can get what you need.” That’s the way I am starting to feel about this presidential election.

Who I want at this point as president is Barack Obama. Yet, I think Hillary Clinton would do a solid job, as well. But what makes me most pleased, really, is the surge in support for John McCain among Republicans. And I don’t say that because I want McCain to be president or because I think Obama would win a battle of youth versus experience against McCain (but he probably would).

Rather, I think McCain would be an acceptable president — Read the rest of this entry »
