Good stuff here from Polly LaBarre’s blog in a posting titled, Freedom = Success (And not the other way around). Insights into why people are successful at work, and a nice summary of the results of Best Buy’s radical initiative, ROWE (Results-Only Work Environment). Good reading.

Online Video Viewers Are All Ages
Posted by Ted Hopton on January 16, 2008
Nearly half of Internet users surveyed in December 2007 said they had visited a video-sharing site such as YouTube, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. That’s up from the year before when one-third of Internet users said they had visited such sites.
The demographics are not all skewed young, either, even though eMarketer’s headline, Young Adults Hit Online Video Sites, implies that. Ages 30-49 are represented well with 51% and ages 50-64 had a very solid 30%, so if your target market is not under 30, there’s a growing opportunity for you to use online video to reach your customers.

Just Answer the Phone Quicker!
Posted by Ted Hopton on January 16, 2008
I’ve started hearing more people talking about automated callback technology in glowing terms. That’s when an announcement plays while you are waiting for your call to be answered, offering to have the call center call you back instead of making you wait in the queue. Even my mother likes it (she always tells me what she likes and doesn’t like about call centers she has called, every time we get together). But I admit I have never been that fond of the practice of postponing calls to be handled later, and I further confess that my bias was heavily influenced by a discussion years ago with Jay Minnucci, ICMI’s Vice President of Consulting Services.
So I emailed Jay recently to see if he’s been won over to the automated callback approach. In a word, “no,” but his response is more fun to read than that: Read the rest of this entry »

Mac Air Lust
Posted by Ted Hopton on January 16, 2008
I sure don’t have a practical need for the new Mac Air laptop that Steve Jobs unveiled yesterday at MacWorld, but that doesn’t lessen my technology-lust for it. It’s shiny and sleek and brand new and cool and does amazing things, plus it would be practical in many ways so I could rationalize going for all the fun aspects of it. Yep, when it comes to electronic gadgets, I’m a sucker, and Apple’s gadgets are some of the most lust-worthy around.
